‘Crime’ – 15 March 2019

Over the summer, we asked for your feedback on the competition and your suggestions for future themes. So many asked for a crime-themed competition that we simply couldn’t disappoint you!

You told us tales of every imaginable crime, from murder and armed robbery to petty theft and embezzlement. Your stories were often morally murky. From the woman murdering her husband’s lover to the car thief who discovers a baby’s body in the boot, it wasn’t always clear where our sympathies should lie. On a lighter note, you asked us to imagine a world where Superman’s crime-fighting efforts create a nightmare of missed targets for the local police. We even had a story about a murderous cat.

We’re publishing three great stories this time. We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we did.
  • ‘The Uncertainty Principle’ by Gary Kittle blends crime and science fiction as he considers the ramifications of changing history. Is murder ever justified? If you could prevent a future atrocity by committing a terrible crime, what would you do? Gary’s well-considered, imaginative and thought-provoking story is the worthy winner of our £150 first prize.

  • ‘Silence Walks’ by Barry Charman is a beautifully-written, spare and moving story suffused with melancholy. We meet Billy just as he confesses to a brutal murder. But will it be enough to convict him? And is everything as it seems? We loved Barry’s story and are delighted to give him our second prize of £75.

  • ‘Smile’ by Alice Nuttall really stood out from the crowd. Most of the stories we read were from either the criminal or the victim’s point of view. Alice’s tale – told from the perspective of a court artist – is an original and striking take on the theme. Alice wins our third prize of £50.
Thanks again to everyone who entered.
